Moving to St. Croix

For those who have not had the experience of living on an island, you may have a multitude of questions as to how to move to St. Croix. We’re here to help!

For starters, there are many resources available to those who wish to move to St. Croix. We recommend:

  • GoToStCroix.com
  • VI Moving Center
  • The Settler’s Handbook for the U.S. Virgin Islands

Getting Your Stuff to St. Croix

The least expensive way to move your entire household to St. Croix is by ship. Ocean freight cost is generally calculated per cubic foot, but heavier items can be subject to weight charges. Items must be delivered by you or a moving company in crates to shippers located in port cities. Most national moving companies have agents in the U.S. Virgin Islands to facilitate your move. Shipping from Florida to St. Croix will take three days to a week. Unless you have a truck and helping hands, you must hire a trucker to move your goods to your house. Check out our list of Movers & Shippers to help find the right services for your move.

Move Your Car to St. Croix

If you’ve decided to move your car to St. Croix from the U.S. mainland, you must arrange to have it shipped on one of the freight carriers that call in the islands. When it rolls off the ship, there are several steps to make it legal for driving on St. Croix, including paying the road tax, clearing U.S. Customs, obtaining insurance and registering it with the USVI Bureau of Motor Vehicles. There are services that can help with this or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can take it on yourself.

The road tax fee is assessed only when you bring your automobile into the territory and are based on NADA (Kelly) Blue Book value. You must pay in cash, certified check or money order. If the car is made totally in the U.S., that means its serial number starts with a 1 or 4, it may come into the Virgin Islands duty free. U.S. Customs charges a duty for new items entering the Territory at a maximum of 6% of your invoice value on foreign made items, vehicles included.

There are new and used vehicles available for sale on St. Croix if you choose not to bring your car along on your move to St. Croix.

Moving Your Pet(s) to St. Croix

If your pet is making the move to St. Croix, there are no restrictions or quarantines as long as you follow a few important steps. You’ll also want to do plenty of research on the best ways to move a pet to St. Croix as there are some airline restrictions and requirements.

If you don’t have a pet, but you hope to once you move to St. Croix, the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center has plenty of cats and dogs available for adoption!
