There are two entrances: one at street level that was the former forge and carriage entrance leading to the former stable; and the formal entrance, one floor up accessed by a double staircase. This grand home has many uses either as a private residence; as a bed and breakfast or as apartments for 4 separate long-term rentals. After Hurricane Hugo, the home was lovingly rebuilt and restored in the 1990's by George Tyler, an expert in restoration, known for award-winning projects such as the Willard Hotel in Washington, DC. He incorporated six Neoclassical arches that connect the entryway, dining room and salon or drawing room. These centuries-old techniques were utilized to promote circulation and facilitate abundant natural light which was required in the 1800's. When you walk through the entrance of the main house, you will feel as though you have been transported back in time or entered a museum. Off the central hallway to the right there is a large dining room with a table that comfortably seats 12. To the left, there is an expansive drawing room with three separate seating areas. All gorgeously appointed with the impressive assortment of period furniture and antiquities that the Tylers collected. A gorgeous powder room for guests and an exit to the courtyard are off the dining room. Upstairs, the primary suite features a bedroom, mirror image bathrooms with views of the harbor, a daybed nook, seating area, office, washer/dryer and mini kitchenette. A veranda off the office, allows you to step outside and overlook the verdant gardens, pool, gazebo, kitchen and apartments. Downstairs, there is a separate bedroom with ensuite bathroom a few steps from the kitchen. There are three apartments within the walls of the compound. Each one is completely separate from the main residence and each featuring one bedroom with living room, kitchen and bathroom. The Pool apartment (unit 2) has a balcony that overlooks the pool. The third-floor apartment (unit 3) features a huge casement picture window and stunning views of Christiansted to the east and north exposures. The largest of the three apartments has a porch and a patio that overlook the beautiful gardens, courtyard and gazebo. One North is the ideal setting for entertaining. The outdoor courtyard is designed for large gatherings with many nooks with seating for private chats. There are towering palm trees that shade the gazebo, a seven-tier fountain from the 1930's and ornamental pond. The tropical garden is lush with orchids, frangipani and flowering plants. Look down to see beautiful chaney and mosaics in the Danish yellow brick floor. One North is a unique opportunity for an owner whose passion is historic homes and antiques. The home could also be a thriving vacation rental ideally situated in the heart of Christiansted, a short walk from restaurants, shops, sailing trips and the seaplane.
