BREAKING NEWS: Limetree Bay Refinery Closes Indefinitely

June 22, 2021 by Team Fedeles

The news of Limetree Bay Refinery’s indefinite closure hit headlines on Monday, June 21, 2021. Local news, including the St. Croix Source, as well as national news sources, like the Washington Post, reported that the refinery will not be re-opening due to financial constraints.

What the Virgin Islands Government is saying

It is reported that the Governor Says Limetree’s Decision to Shut Down Was Not a Surprise. In May, the refinery was forced to temporarily close for 60 days by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Of high importance is the roughly 800 jobs affected by the closure. Governor Bryan says, “This announcement is not something our administration wanted or hoped for, but it is certainly something for which we are prepared. Our Department of Labor has already activated its rapid response teams to help affected workers transition to new employment and or connect them with unemployment benefits.” The Governor has also said that the closure of the refinery will not affect the oil storage terminal, which is a separate entity with about 88 employees.

How does this affect St. Croix real estate?

There is no indication that this news will slow down the real estate industry. St. Croix has experienced a robust market of statesiders investing in and/or moving to island, whether as a primary or secondary home. Environmental impacts are a positive byproduct that is expected with the closing after some recent pollutants were dispersed in local neighborhoods, causing a 60 day shutdown in May.

Caribbean Travel Awards 2021

December 15, 2020 by Team Fedeles

The US Virgin Islands have been named the Destination of the Year in the Caribbean Travel Awards 2021 by Caribbean Journal. This is the 7th annual edition of the awards and it’s exciting to see a photo of St. Croix’s Protestant Cay right there on the home page!

The article points out that, “in six months, the Caribbean has largely set a global example for how to reopen in a careful, focused, safe manner — providing its signature sanctuary for travelers and an important injection of economic energy.” Then goes on to say that, “the USVI has been a model for tourism reopenings around the region…”

December Newsletter: Home for Christmas

December 17, 2019 by Team Fedeles

One of my favorite songs this time of year is I’ll Be Home for Christmas by Bing Crosby.

I’ll be home for Christmas
You can count on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents under the tree

Christmas eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I’ll be home for Christmas

If only in my dreams

This time of year, we enjoy welcoming our snowbird friends “home” for the season, as well as new and long-time visitors. Like clockwork, folks arrive to escape the cold or for their favorite holiday festivities, like the Christmas Boat Parade (view our photo gallery) and Coquito Festival. The St. George Village Botanical Garden hosts their traditional Under the Mistletoe tree auction fundraiser and Christmas Spoken Here, which is a wonderful day to shop for gifts from local artisans and vendors.

Loved this outline of St. Croix on the “Sea Feather” during the St. Croix Christmas Boat Parade

Maybe you’re looking for more of an island-themed jingle. This year’s Crucian Christmas Festival will honor Stanley and The Ten Sleepless Knights for 50 years of music! There will even be a Carnival village named “Stanleyville,” according to the St. Croix Source. TSK holiday favorites include Mama Make Your Johnny Cake and Guavaberry.

The USVI Festivals Facebook page can help you plan your Crucian Christmas Festival experience. We found this handy calendar of events that says the date when each activity will take place.

As we look toward the start of a new year (and decade!), big things are happening on St. Croix. Limetree Bay hosted a community open house in November to share information about the refinery restart. I shared a row on a recent flight with two gentlemen who were on island to help secure the pipeline and it sounded like all was going according to plan. You can learn more about the effort in this article, Restart of idled St. Croix oil refinery set for early 2020 after delay.

Finally, if you’ve ever enjoyed a sunset from St. Croix, we think you’ll agree with #1 from this list of 20 Destinations With The Most Stunning Sunsets. “St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands is a special place for many people. Yet, it is not as big of a tourist destination as some of the other areas on our list. However, it is one of the most naturally beautiful and affordable places you can visit.” And, we might add, to live!

No matter your playlist this holiday, may there be plenty of presents under the tree and the love light gleam all around you. And if you’re ready to replace snow with sand, we can help you find the home of your dreams on St. Croix!

Warm regards,
Team Fedeles

St. Croix and Buck Island Featured in National Geographic

February 1, 2017 by Team Fedeles

National Geographic photographer, Brian Skerry, described his experience in the waters around Buck Island as, “you feel like you’re in a storybook.” We believe Skerry is more than a photographer — he is a storyteller and has captured the very best of St. Croix. His breathtaking National Geographic video takes you underwater to the incredible elkhorn coral and up to the shores where tiny sea turtles emerge from the sand.

Skerry reminds us that there are few places in U.S. waters that are protected. Buck Island is America’s first protected underwater monument, thanks to President Kennedy in 1961. He says he feels privileged to be able to see it — and what a treat for the rest of us to see this treasure captured by such a prestigious publication as National Geographic.

The photographer also mentioned the National Park Service Centennial, which was on August 25, 2016. Such an interesting tie-in to the celebration of the upcoming USVI centennial celebration of Transfer Day on March 31, 2017.

A wonderful feature story of Why It’s Important to Save Our Seas’ Last Pristine Places is in the February issue of National Geographic, including a lengthy history of Buck Island and stunning photography. We encourage you to read it when you have a chance and do what you can to help protect the natural beauty of St. Croix!
