Beautiful Downtown Christiansted

May 5, 2016 by Team Fedeles

Christiansted is arguably the most beautiful town in the Caribbean, but it’s more than just a pretty face. One admirer — the National Park Service no less — boasts that “no place in the Caribbean still demonstrates the architectural, economic, and political influence of Europe like the Christiansted National Historic Site.” The site is seven acres close to the Christiansted waterfront, and includes buildings constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries for St. Croix’s colonial society and its plantation economy. St. Croix’s history is dramatic, often heart-wrenching, and certainly worth investigation.

christianstedFort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be built by the Danes after they purchased St. Croix from France in 1733. The fort was built to pay homage to the Danish king and also to meet the urgent need to protect St. Croix against invasion from European powers, smugglers and pirates! The yellow-ochre color of the fort and other historic buildings is the color used to paint the Nyboder naval barracks in Copenhagen, planned and built by King Christian IV in the 18th century.

Just across from the fort, an exhibit in the Steeple Building documents the religious history of St. Croix. The graceful steeple is a reminder of the Lutheran congregation that once held services there.

Next to the fort, the sweeping staircase of the Old Customs House provides excellent photo opportunities. The building is now home to the National Park Service offices and a wealth of information is available there.

The Old Scale House on the wharf displays the heavy-duty scale once used to weigh barrels of rum and sugar before shipment to Europe.

Governor General Peter von Scholten maintained his office and official residence in splendid fashion in majestic Government House on King Street.

Next to the Fort along the boardwalk is the King Christian hotel, which has been welcoming visitors to St. Croix for more than 200 years.

Finally, Danish architecture students are assisting the Virgin Islands government with the first phase of a project to restore the abandoned government building at the corner of Hospital St. and East End Rd. with the goal of housing the new UVI-affiliated School of Architecture in that building. Funding for the school will be split between sources in Denmark and in the Virgin Islands.

The 2016 Captain Morgan Triathlon

May 2, 2016 by Team Fedeles

Imagine, if you can, charging into Christiansted Harbor at 6:30am to begin a 1.24-mile swim, then hopping onto a bicycle to race a 56-mile course that includes an uphill battle with “The Beast” on the north shore. Finally, you arrive at the finish line in Christiansted town after a two-loop 13.1- mile foot race around the east end of the island.

stxtriathlonThat was the scene on Sunday, May 1st, as 251 athletes raced to qualify for 30 spots in an upcoming World Championship Ironman event. This was the 28th St. Croix triathalon and, as usual, spectators lined the roads to cheer runners and bikers on while volunteers ensured that the athletes’ paths stayed clear of obstacles and offered cups of water. The day before the race, three inches of rain and wind had blown harbor buoys and transition fences off course but, thanks to the efforts of the Department of Public Works and a number of hard- working Crucians, everything was in order by Sunday.

Categories, in addition to the main event, included a relay with 3-member teams competing on the same course as half- ironman competitors and a Sprint division consisting of a 750-meter swim and an 8-mile bike course with a 4-mile run to finish. Bridget Klein made Crucians proud as she finished 2nd overall in the Sprint event. Frenchman Francky Favre was the overall winner of the main event with a time of 4:43:14.

As a festive prelude to the highly anticipated Triathalon Jump-Up on Friday night, on Friday afternoon the VI Track and Field Federation and VI Pace Runners hosted the 18th Annual Children’s Run from Sunday Market Square to Fort Christianvaern. More than 200 children aged 13 and under participated, each receiving a trophy and a medal upon crossing the finish line. Then it was time for the festive Jump- Up, and stores and restaurants stayed open late to accommodate visitors and locals mingling with musicians and mocko-jumbies.

Beauty & the Beast

April 29, 2016 by Team Fedeles

Cap-Morgan-triathlon-logoThe Captain Morgan Ironman 70.3 St. Croix Race is upon us! This is the 28th year of the race that really brings out the best of our spectacular island.

Of course, the St. Croix Triathlon is nicknamed Beauty & the Beast because it combines the natural beauty of the largest US Virgin Island — turquoise Caribbean waters, lush hillsides and inviting beaches — with one of the most notorious hill climbs in the sport. Ironman.com describes it as, “The crowning feature of this race is the legendary climb on the bike course, appropriately named ‘The Beast.’ Once you’ve conquered it, you’ll never look at a hill the same way again.”

Real estate on St. Croix isn’t just for living, it makes for a challenging and rewarding athletic course too!

Our friends at GoToStCroix.com shared some really nice quotes from triathletes who have competed on St. Croix. And Ironman.com describes the St. Croix Triathlon as a bucket list event for triathletes worldwide.

Welcome to everyone visiting for the Triathlon, good luck to all of the athletes, and thank you to all of the volunteers who make this event happen!

Ahhhh Spring

March 29, 2016 by Team Fedeles

Sure, on St. Croix we don’t spend the first part of spring moving our sweaters to the back of the closet or putting the snowblower in storage, but we certainly welcome the change of the season. The days get a little longer, the ocean a littler warmer. The farmer’s market is bursting with colorful produce and delicious smells. The busy-ness of high season starts to wind down.

march_tasteSome of my personal favorite activities of Spring are St. Croix Food and Wine Experience (April 8-12) and Taste of St. Croix (April 14). Events range from a barbecue at the Frederksted pier to the elegant Cork & Fork dinners held at spectacular private homes to a showcase of the best of St. Croix’s hospitality talent. It truly is the tastiest week in the Caribbean!

In a recent issue of The Avis, headlines boasted “Major tax benefits for businesses in Christiansted revitalization plan” and “Open for business! New storefronts spring up in C’sted”.

Tax benefits include 90% exemption on income taxes, 100% exemption on gross receipts taxes, and 100% exemption on property taxes for up to eight years for businesses that fall under specific criteria. Learn more from the United States Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority.

A walk around cozy downtown Christiansted will lead you to your long-time favorites, as well as some new favorites, like Milk & Honey, Savor St. Croix, Toast Diner and Shupe’s on the Boardwalk. The much anticipated openings of the Caravelle Hotel and Casino and balter, a fine-dining restaurant, will be two great steps toward an even more vibrant downtown.

sandypointturtleOut West, Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is now closed for turtle nesting season. Two miles of continuous sandy beach, deep near shore water access and lack of fringing reef provide ideal conditions and nesting habitat for leatherback sea turtles. A turtle siting is always a special moment here!

New restaurants and activities are also popping up in Frederiksted, like Paradise on the Waterfront and East End Watersports’ new fly board. We’re thrilled for our clients, Kathy and Randy, who in December celebrated one year as owners of Caribbean Breeze Apartments and Vacation Homes in downtown Frederiksted, walking distance to beaches, dining and nightlife. Thanks to Clean Sweep Frederiksted, brightly colored murals make the streets of town come alive.

No matter where you are, we hope you enjoy the new colors, sites, sounds and tastes that Spring brings.

Warm regards,
The Fedeles Team
